2015 Garlic has begun to sprout it's little pointy tips up through the soil after it's long winters nap.
  • Well it's now May 20, 2015 - and can you believe we had 28 degrees this morning.  Brrr cold.  We had to put all of the potted plants into the greenhouse last night.  Brggg - this morning the temperature is chilly, but the garlic loves the cool temps.
  • We've finally begun to receive some much needed rain.  The week of April 6 we had almost two inches in two days - a bit much at one time, but we are thankful for it none the less.
  • Raised beds ensured that the large amount of rain didn't leave our garlic bulbs in water.  The large amount of water was able to run down in between the raised beds allowing the plant to get the water it needs to grow without it drowning the new little plant.
  • We've been preparing more raised beds to plant potatoes, onions and scallions.
  • April 12, 2015 - we removed the straw from the Elephant Garlic and our new garlic varieties.  The straw provided a much needed bed covering as this past winter in Newaygo MI was C. O. L. D.  We had negative 27 degrees for a couple of days and would most likely lost garlic in that hard freeze.  Once we removed the Oat Straw from the beds, we did find some slumbering garlic just barely beginning to sneak a peak up from the soil.

Hello, my name is Linda Rickert.  I will be "trying" to keep a journal of the garlic farm.  A place for us to review what has been happening here on the farm.
