August - hot and still busy.

Typically we have all of the garlic out of the ground in July.  The weeds took over most of the garlic rows and isles so the harvest had to be done by hand most of the time.  We did use the tractor to lift bed rows but we had to stop a lot and remove the tall over grown weeds.

It's been decided that we cannot do pre-orders for garlic as the weeds took so much nutrients we had small bulbs, so the pre-orders took most of our personal seed garlic.  Next year orders will start when we get the garlic harvested.

Lots of time spent weeding, harvesting by hand and then drying garlic.

What we have learned:  1.)  Garlic in a little bit earlier before the frost.
2.)  Corrections for irrigation:  Correct hole spacing drip tape - 12" hole centers,  irrigation in the ground and connected to run to water the garlic bulbs so they can get settled for their winter nap.
3.)  Deeper holes for the garlic cloves.
4.)  Weed earlier and often, no vacation times in the spring.

Hello, my name is Linda Rickert.  I will be "trying" to keep a journal of the garlic farm.  A place for us to review what has been happening here on the farm.
